Refugees’ Law – Political Asylum in Greece.

Since 2015, Greece has been in the spotlight of the refugee crisis, receiving thousands of citizens coming from belligerent or instable areas (mainly Syria, Iraq, Iran, Turkey) who seek for international protection in Europe.

Our country, committed by the Geneva Refugee Convention and the EU Regulation 604/2013 (Dublin III) to offer international protection to third country nationals fulfilling the legal requirements (“owing to wellfounded fear of being persecuted for reasons of race, religion, nationality, membership of a particular social group or political opinion, is outside the country of his nationality and is unable or, owing to such fear, is unwilling to avail himself of the protection of that country; or who, not having a nationality and being outside the country of his former habitual residence as a result of such events, is unable or, owing to such fear, is unwilling to return to it”). Moreover, the Greek law n. 4375/2016 defines the procedure of submitting political asylum request, examining them by the authorities and granting international protection in general.

Access to the asylum system is provided regardless of nationality or state of birth. However, it requires caution in order that the applicant receives the maximum possible protection.
